Three VPS students earned recognition in the 2017 Washington state Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.
Christine Choi, a student at Columbia River High School, received a Gold Key in the drawing and illustration category for “Forest.” Jason Phelps is her art teacher.
Ryan Bittner, a student at Vancouver School of Arts and Academics, received a Silver Key and an honorable mention for two pieces. The self-taught digital painter also sold two images this year to the game Magic the Gathering for use in merchandising. Crystal Zeller is his art teacher.
Christina Starks, also a VSAA student, received an honorable mention for her short story “Stealing Her Day.” Jody Adams is her writing teacher.
The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards recognize the myriad creative talents of students in seventh through 12th grades and provide opportunities for exhibition, publication and scholarships. The awards are presented by the nonprofit Alliance for Young Artists & Writers.
