Vancouver Public Schools students dominated the 2020 Southwest Washington Congressional App Challenge, earning two out of the top three finalist honors.
- Ian MacDonald of Vancouver School of Arts and Academics took first place for an app titled Time to Recolor. The puzzle game focuses on the concept of time and change. Watch a YouTube video about the app.
- Claire Russell, Phoebe Abbruzzese, Paige Barrett and Emma Fancher of Skyview High School earned third place for their app titled Diver City. The app highlights marine conservation by challenging players to collect debris as they swim in the ocean. Watch a YouTube video about the app.
The apps were selected for recognition by a team of judges that included science, technology, engineering and math educators as well as technology professionals from the region.
MacDonald’s app went on to represent Washington state’s 3rd Congressional District in the National Congressional App Challenge. Nationwide, students submitted 3,088 apps. Just over 300 were named national winners, including Time to Recolor.
Winners of the 2020 Congressional App Challenge receive AWS web credits, a gift card from Southwest Airlines and have their winning app displayed at the U.S. Capitol for one year.
